MapleWind Caprines is located in Dawn, Missouri, also known as "God's Country." Rural northwest Missouri can be brutally cold in the winter, brutally hot in the summer, but the springs and falls are so beautiful it makes the other times worth living through. We are always up for a visit if you're passing through!
We started our current herd of dairy goats in 2009, with the purchase of our herd matriarch, Fiction (see our History page for more information). We have shown the Missouri State Fair GCH and/or BOB doe in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2016, 2017, and 2018. We do our best to attend National shows as often as we can, and have shown in 2010, 2014, 2017, and 2018.
2018 was a very challenging year for us, with both extreme highs and the lowest of lows. We started out by losing our beloved SGCH FunnyGirl, and lost several other special animals during the early spring. Then, Missouri faced one of the most severe droughts in recent history, which impacted the health of our herd. Yet, despite this, we were elated to win two Best in Shows with Fanfare, finishing her championship as a 3 year old. Other highlights of the year included:
Caroline being on the 1st place fitting team at the National Show
All three yearlings making the cut at the National Show, with placings of 5th, 6th and 14th
Fanfare placing 8th place in the huge 3 year old class at the National Show
Three does appraised Excellent during our 2018 Linear Appraisal session
Two new Champions in our herd: Fanfare and Aragorn
Fanfare being designated as an SG doe.
Our herd is on DHIR test, and we do our best to Linear Appraise as often as we can. We are working toward having the herd DNA tested and will plan on collecting our herdsires each year. Semen is available of many of our current or past herd sires.
Herd health is a priority. We CAE test annually and have always been 100% negative. We judiciously use wormers when needed and each animal is given individual care as needed. Hooves are trimmed on an 8-week rotation. We feed Purina feeds and a combination of high-quality grass and alfalfa hay. Lots of browse in our pasture rounds out our feeding program.
Kids are raised on pooled raw milk and at times, are dam raised. Our dam-raised kids are friendly and affectionate and are given bottles on milk-test days. We have found that dam raising for the first couple of weeks really helps get the kids and the dams started off strong, and then moving to the lamb bar helps keep everyone friendly and gets them eating feed quickly. If you prefer for your kid to be raised on heat-treated colostrum/pasteurized milk, please let me know.
We keep a very small herd and often have doe kids and milking does available. Please inquire for availability. A deposit of $100 is required to hold your kid. If we decide to retain a kid or your kid is not born, you can ask for a refund, or we can hold your deposit over for the next year.
Kids are shipped by air from Kansas City International airport, and we prefer to ship by 2 weeks of age. We would love you to come out and see the herd to pick up your kid if possible. If you ship by air, the cost of a CVI, the crate, mileage to the airport (approx a 2 hour drive) are included in your expense.
Please contact us if you have any questions or if you just want to "talk goats."
